Τhe European Court of Justice decided that Greece violated Articles 3 and 4 of Directive 91/271/EC of 21 May 1991 concerning urban wastewater treatment (OJ 1991 L 135, p. 40). According to the decision, the country’s main transgression was its failure to provide an adequate collecting and/or treatment system for urban wastewater το 23 small towns (with a population equivalent to more than 15,000). Greece should have complied with the Directive by 31 December 2000.
