A EUR 1 million fine has been imposed, for the first time, on the state-controlled Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC S.A.) by the Ministry of Environment, because sulfur dioxide and particle emissions from its lignite-powered stations were found to exceed statutory levels. The Ministry of Environment also brought the case before the competent prosecutor to determine any criminal liabilities and stated that PPC is considered liable for 40% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions.
